Raising awareness. Reducing shame.

Supporting recovery.

The BFRB Foundation connects people to support, education, and access to care for body-focused repetitive behaviors.

We’re building a community where people feel understood and supported so you don’t have to navigate this alone.

What are BFRBs?

They are not simply habits or bad choices. BFRBs are complex, often misunderstood conditions, and people who struggle with them deserve understanding, compassion, and access to effective care.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are conditions like hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting.

You’re Not Alone

BFRBs affect millions of people across all ages and backgrounds.

If you’re struggling, you’re not alone.

Support is available.

Common BFRBs

BFRBs can show up in different ways, but they often share similar patterns and challenges.

Hair Pulling

Often happens automatically or without realizing it

Trichotillomania
Repeated pulling of hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other areas of the body. This can be difficult to control and may cause distress or noticeable hair loss.

Skin Picking

Can feel like a cycle that’s hard to stop

Excoriation Disorder
Repeated picking at the skin that can lead to irritation, wounds, or scarring. Many people describe feeling stuck in a cycle that’s hard to stop.

Nail Biting

Often tied to stress, anxiety, or focus

Onychophagia
Chronic nail biting that goes beyond a habit and can cause physical damage or emotional distress.
