How to Practice Urge Surfing
Urge surfing is a way to ride out an urge without acting on it.
Instead of fighting the urge or giving in, you notice it, stay with it, and let it pass.
Why it works
Urges come in waves. They rise, peak, and fall.
Most only last a few minutes.
When you don’t act on them, they lose strength over time.
Notice the Urge: Pause and name it “I notice I have an urge to pick”
Bring Attention to Your Body: Notice where you feel it and what it feels like
Breathe and Stay: Let the urge be there without acting on it
Remind Yourself: This is an urge, not a command
Wait it Out: Give it a minute or two and see what happens
Try this when an urge shows up
What to expect
The urge might not disappear right away, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to eliminate the urge.
The goal is to change how you respond to it.
If it feels too hard
You don’t have to do this perfectly.
Try one of these:
• Use a fidget while you wait
• Set a 1-minute timer
• Step into another room or change your position
Even small delays make a difference.
Keep it simple
You don’t need to do every step.
Start with noticing the urge and waiting just a little longer.
That’s enough to begin.
This takes practice. Each time you pause, even briefly, you’re building a new pattern.
